The Roswell story might have remained a local mystery had it not been revived by official scrutiny in the 1990s. Findings and Reactions
The official reports had a paradoxical effect on the Roswell debate. On one hand, they provided the most detailed government explanation ever offered and confirmed that secrecy had indeed surrounded the original event because of Cold War intelligence operations. On the other hand, the admission that the public had been misled in 1947 reinforced suspicions among many UFO researchers that additional information could still be hidden.
