What Mogul Was Trying to Detect
Project Mogul was created in the early Cold War as a way to detect possible Soviet nuclear tests from great distances. Researchers experimented with long balloon arrays carrying instruments designed to exploit atmospheric sound channels, allowing them to listen for the acoustic signatures of large explosions.
