The common shorthand description of Roswell is that officials first said “flying saucer” and then said “weather balloon”. That summary misses a crucial distinction.
According to Air Force investigations conducted in the 1990s, the debris was not from a routine meteorological balloon launch. It was linked to Project Mogul, a highly secret Cold War programme that attached unusual equipment to balloon arrays in order to detect distant Soviet nuclear tests.
