Introduction
The argument over Jesse Marcel’s testimony and the famous Fort Worth photographs sits at the centre of the Roswell debate. Marcel, the intelligence officer who helped recover debris from the New Mexico ranch in July 1947, later became the most influential witness claiming that the material was not an ordinary balloon. Yet the strongest contemporary evidence against his later recollections was the set of photographs taken in Fort Worth showing him posing with debris that appeared consistent with balloon and radar-target equipment. More than three decades after the event, Marcel gave interviews in which he rejected the official explanation that the Roswell debris came from a weather balloon. He described material that he considered highly unusual and claimed the public had not been shown the real wreckage.
