Roswell happened in July 1947, before the Soviet Union had publicly demonstrated an atomic bomb and before satellites could watch Soviet test sites from orbit. Within the best-supported account, Roswell was covering up a classified surveillance method aimed at one of the most important questions of the early Cold War: when would the Soviet Union acquire and test nuclear weapons? Project Mogul was not glamorous in the later science-fiction sense, but it was strategically sensitive. It joined physics, atmospheric science, military intelligence, and public misdirection in a way that made a simple debris recovery politically explosive.

The “weather balloon” story therefore should be read as both false and revealing. It was false because the relevant object was not merely an ordinary weather balloon doing ordinary weather work. It was revealing because the substitute explanation pointed towards the correct family of objects: balloons, radar targets, and instrument packages, not engines, propulsion systems, exotic alloys, or biological remains.

Roswell remains powerful because it shows how official secrecy can outlive the secret itself.
